At the medium resolution of 1080p, we actually were unable to come to an agreement with the BBC on how much higher our bitrate should be, even at a loss of quality. They recommended a higher bitrate, but we said they'd have to deliver better quality than in the chart below. Maybe other users of the BBC's services will feel differently, or the BBC will lower their bitrate suggestions in light of our findings, but we typically prefer better quality to less—and we didn't want to increase our bitrate rate just to please the BBC. So, we stayed at the lowest bitrate for this tier.
Finally, there are the providers who have no clue about what's good quality: Youtbue, Vimeo, Ustream, Hangouts. Granted, they're trying to cater to a different kind of audience with their bitrates. However, it's no excuse for offering lower quality than we did. Youtbue, Vimeo, and Ustream are horrible quality video at any resolution due to very visible compression artifacts. We are likewise completely unable to watch Hangouts. There, the quality is worse than listening to a noisy phone call, and it's impossible to watch without zooming in. d2c66b5586
